Winfred Hawkins

Winfred Earl Hawkins, the only son of Carrie Mae Hawkins was born on June 25, 1948 in Texarkana, Arkansas. To his family, he was known as "Win" and to his many friends, he was known as "Hawk". Winfred attended Booker T. Washington High School in Texarkana, AR where he excelled in football, basketball, and track. He was All State Running Back for two years before graduating in 1966. He accepted an athletic scholarship to Mississippi Valley State University where he was a four-year starter. He was lauded by his coaches for his versatility in playing running back, wide-out, special teams (punts and kick-off returns) and tight-end. After his college football career, he was drafted by the United States Army where he served for two years. After his Army career, he returned to Mississippi Valley State University to complete his degree in 1973. Later, he was signed by the Pittsburg Steelers as a defensive back. Winfred received his Master of Arts Degree from Webster College in St. Louis, Missouri in May 1976. Winfred began his professional career with the United States Government, Department of Defense. He spent 33 years with the U. S. Government, where he retired as an Integrated Logistics Support Manager (ILSM) for the Project Managers Office of Tactical Wheeled Vehicles at the U.S. Army-Tank Automotive Command (TACOM) located in Warren, Michigan. Winfred was inducted into the Mississippi Valley Football Hall of Fame in April 2012. Winfred was an avid golfer, and will be remembered for his smile, his infectious laughter, and living life to the fullest! He retired to Texarkana, Arkansas to spend time with his mother whom he was devoted to, his aunt, and his uncle between rounds of golf. Winfred was preceded in death by his father, Theodore R. Johnson. Those left to cherish fond memories are his mother, Ms. Carrie Mae Hawkins, Texarkana, AR; two aunts, Helen Hawkins Collins, Texarkana, AR and Margaret Hawkins Solis, Dallas TX; an uncle, Willie Polk Hawkins (Lillie), Texarkana, TX; a brother, Raymond Johnson, Atlanta, GA; a sister, Delores Johnson Martin, Eden, North Carolina; devoted longtime companion, Shirley Wilson, Wake Village, TX; special friend, Kenneth Porter, Texarkana, AR; his lifelong friends from Booker T. Washington High School; and a host of other relatives and friends. Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at College Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 1602 Rose Street, Texarkana, AR. with Rev. Tommy Law/Pastor officiating, and Dr. Harry Keys of Memphis, TN Eulogist. Memorial services are under the direction of Jones Stuart Mortuary.
