Texarkana, Arkansas, Police Detective Holly Smith died Wednesday after a year-long battle with cancer, according to the Police Department.
"While the world is diminished with her passing, it is undoubtedly a better place for having known her. Holly, we love you and will miss you deeply," TAPD posted on its Facebook page late Wednesday.
Holly, a Liberty-Eylau native, was diagnosed in March 2019 with an aggressive brain tumor called glioblastoma.
Smith's funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Texarkana Funeral Home, on Four States Fair Parkway in Texarkana, Arkansas. The services will be limited to family but will be live-streamed on TAPD's Facebook page and Texarkana Funeral Home's Facebook page.
A graveside service will follow at East Memorial Gardens on East Broad Street.
A walk-through visitation will be held from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. A registry book will be present for visitors to sign and pay their respects.
A number of fundraisers have been held during the past year to help Holly and her family. Her husband Cpl. Billy Smith is also a TAPD officer and the couple met on the job and married in 2008. They have three children.
Holly and Billy talked to the Gazette in December 2019 about the huge amount of support they received from their law enforcement family and from the community.
Holly's voice had been affected by the tumor but Billy helped her share her story.
"She has a story to tell and I told her, 'If you can't tell it. I will stand beside you and tell it for you,'" Billy Smith said during the 2019 interview.
