NEW BOSTON, Texas -- A man accused of breaking into a neighbor's home in Texarkana, Texas, while wielding an axe last year is facing a jury this week in Bowie County.

William Charles Gatewood, 59, is charged with burglary of a habitation with the intent to commit another felony. A jury was chosen Tuesday morning to decide the case and began hearing testimony later that afternoon.

Police body camera footage was played for the jury by Assistant District Attorney Katie Carter.

Video recorded by Texarkana Texas Police Department officer Aaron Jones showed Gatewood was enraged when officers arrived. Gatewood is seated naked on a chair on the front porch of a house on Austin Street with a bright orange sweatshirt covering his lap.

Gatewood can be heard yelling, "You're lucky I didn't kill you," to someone across the street as the officer attempts to calm Gatewood down.

The officer's hand can be seen lifting an axe from Gatewood's porch, near his chair.

Gatewood shouts at officers about his girlfriend, who was away and was not at the neighbor's house, despite Gatewood's insistence that she was across the street.

Gatewood's shouts at Jones, "You get your dumb ass off the police force if you don't know the law."

The video shows Jones walk across the street and speak to Gatewood's neighbor. The neighbor showed holes punched into the cover of her hot tub which she claims were made by Gatewood with the axe. She points out damage to her back door and tells the officer that Gatewood ran through her house and out the front door.

Gatewood allegedly chased a man around the neighbor's yard with the axe.

A second body camera video from TTPD officer Thomas Shaddix captures Gatewood telling Shaddix he will make him eat his pistol as he rants about his girlfriend.

At some point, Gatewood stands and shoves Shaddix, prompting him to deploy his pepper spray. Gatewood is eventually taken into custody and put into a police vehicle at the end of the video.

Jurors were placed in an evening recess by 5th District Judge Bill Miller with instructions to return to court Wednesday morning. The neighbor who owns the house Gatewood allegedly damaged with an axe and the man Gatewood allegedly chased with the axe are expected to take the stand Wednesday.

Gatewood is represented by Assistant Public Defender Bart Craytor.

If convicted, Gatewood faces five to 99 years or life in prison.
