IN OUR VIEW — Sky-High Firearms: TSA confiscates more guns this year than ever before

There's a saying that many in our area take to heart: "More guns, less crime."

The idea is that if more law-abiding citizens are armed, then perhaps those less inclined to follow the law might think twice before committing a crime. And if they don't, then the "good guy with a gun" might be able to stop the crime and maybe save lives.

But how far does that go? How about a few miles up in the air? In an enclosed space?

The Transportation Security Administration have confiscated 4,495 firearms so far this year that passengers tried to bring on planes at airports across the country.

That's more than double the number confiscated last year -- the highest number on record.

More than 80% of the firearms were loaded.

No doubt some passengers simply forgot they had a gun in their briefcase or carry-on bag. With more people armed these days that's bound to happen.

But some folks no doubt thought they could get away with it. Probably for self-protection when they reached their destination.

Bad idea. Even worse when you consider that incidents of unruliness and even violence by frustrated and angry passengers are on the rise. Most of them have to due with mask requirements and other COVID-19 restrictions. Alcohol plays a role, too.

Guns, anger, booze. Not a good combination way up in the sky. A "good guy with a gun" might stop something from happening. He could also take down the whole plane with one shot.

Whatever your Second Amendment views, your gun doesn't belong on a commercial airliner. Leave firearms at home when you fly.
