Man charged with aggravated assault in shooting

TEXARKANA, Texas -- A Bowie County grand jury last week indicted a man accused of shooting another in the face as he sat in a car with a woman and two young children.

Alfred Reynolds Jr., 31, was indicted Thursday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury, as well as three counts of deadly conduct involving a firearm. The assault charge relates to the man Reynolds allegedly shot, while the deadly conduct charges refer to three other lives put in danger during the alleged shooting.

Reynolds is being held in the Bowie County jail with bail set at $450,000.

The man Reynolds is accused of shooting is allegedly the new boyfriend of a woman Reynolds had recently dated, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Reynolds and the woman had reportedly ended a two-year relationship about four months before the shooting Jan. 21, according to a probable cause affidavit. The woman was sitting in the driver's seat and the shooting victim was in the passenger seat as the couple went to Sunset Apartments, 1601 Allen Lane, to pick up the woman's children from the bus stop.

The woman told Texarkana, Texas, police officers she had been having trouble with Reynolds and that he had sent her a message that morning that allegedly stated, "Y'all dead."

Reynolds allegedly fired two shots, at least one of which struck the man in the face as he sat in the car. Two boys, ages 3 and 6, were in the back seat at the time of the shooting, and blood was found on the 6-year-old's jacket.

The 31-year-old alleged victim's injuries were not life-threatening. According to the affidavit, a bullet entered and exited the man's left cheek under his eye.

If convicted of aggravated assault, Reynolds faces five to 99 years or life in prison. Each of the three counts of deadly conduct is punishable by two to 10 years in prison.
