HOPE, Ark. – Any locals who ever wished there was a class on how to work those applications on your phone may be in luck.

The University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana is offering a Mobile Apps 101 course on March 1, March 8 and March 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hempstead Hall on the Hope campus. It will be the college's first course of its kind.

The class will teach students to understand, navigate and learn savvy tricks for apps on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It is part of a three-month series of different computer and technology courses for the community offered by UAHT.

"The course was originally geared toward senior adults and those who may not have much experience with technology and may have recently gotten a new phone or tablet," Instructor Rachel Parson said. "But this class is basically for anyone who wants to get the most out of their apps and learn how to sync them across their devices. The class will be an informal setting where we will work together in learning how to get the most out of our apps."

Parson said the inspiration came from personal experience.

"Basically all my friends and family come to me all the time asking for help with their devices, so I finally thought, why not do a class?" she said.

It also came from my professional experience, Parson explained, as she is one of the Intro to Computers instructors at UAHT.

"In our course we discuss the importance of mobile apps and how they are important to productivity," she said. "Certain productivity apps, like Microsoft Office and Google apps, email, Zoom and cloud-based storage apps are used on phones and tablets every day – especially since more jobs have gone remote – which caused me realize this course can be for virtually anyone who needs to know more in managing and using their device apps."

It has not been confirmed, but Parson suspects UAHT may be one of the only colleges in the area offering such a course.

"We just want to try something new and see if we can meet the needs of our community," Parson said. "In the end, I hope this class can help students to quell frustrations with using apps and optimizing them for their phone or tablet, which will aid them in getting the most out of their mobile device."

Students must bring their own personal mobile devices to this class. The cost for the course is $10 per session or $30 for all sessions.
