TEXARKANA, Texas -- Former Texas State House District 1 Rep. George Lavender has announced his campaign to run for the same post in the same district.

Lavender, a local businessman, who served District 1 from 2011 to 2015, is seeking the Republican nomination for the position currently held by District 1 Rep. Gary VanDeaver.

"We desperately need a representative that will truly represent District 1" Lavender said. "Our community deserves someone who will respond to our concerns and answer constituents' questions -- as well as work every day to protect us from the damage being done to the citizens of Texas. We need a true conservative."

Lavender, who attended Texarkana Arkansas High School and earned a bachelor's degree in business management from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, said he has owned a local business for 37 years.

Lavender is a member of First Baptist Church, Texarkana, Texas, on Moores Lane. He has been a volunteer youth coach for 20 years, he says, working with the Pleasant Grove Youth Organization, the Boys & Girls Club and the Dixie League, in addition to being a supporter of the First Choice Pregnancy Center and Watersprings Ranch.

Lavender has been married to his wife, Jan Timberlake Lavender for 43 years. They have three children and eight grandchildren.

"Now, more than ever, is when we need leaders that will stand up to the storm that is at our front door," he said. "I will once again fight for a secure border, fight to eliminate property taxes, fight to protect our water resources and stand up against federal overreach and mandates that harm our communities and our lives."

Lavender said he has a proven conservative voting record and will return to Austin to fight for the community's values.
