IN YOUR VIEW/Speed Limits: Would you favor cutting back to save lives?

January 27, 2022 at 10:00 p.m.

Starting in 2019, traffic fatalities in the U.S. began to climb, reversing a three-year trend that saw lower deaths from road accidents.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told the Associated Press this week that date to be released next week would show traffic fatalities through the third quarter of 2021 at their highest number since 2016.

Buttigieg says he has plan to reduce those numbers. And one key factor is reducing speed limits.

Over the next two years, the department will offer around $5 billion in grants to states to improve highway safety -- and that includes cutting back on speed limits both on city streets and on highways

Right now, for example, rural and Interstate highway speed limits run from 60 mph to 80 mph across the U.S.. On one stretch of State Hwy 130 in Texas the limit is 85 mph, the highest limit in the country.

Some says lower speed limits save lives and point to data from the time when the national speed limit was 55 mph that showed. it reduced fatalities by 36,000 over five year. But others says more recent data shows lowering limits has little effect on actual driver travel speeds or highway deaths.

We want to know what you think. Would you support lowering speed limits if it would reduce traffic fatalities? Or are you against reducing speed limits?

Last Week: How's He Doing?

Last week's question was about President Joe Biden's first year in office. How has President Biden done in his first year in office? If you voted for President Biden, are you happy with your choice?

Thank God the American people realized how extremely dangerous Trump was to democracy and elected Biden and Harris. Biden cares for America and Americans and is doing an excellent job dealing with the carnage and corruption left behind by Trump. You can't get any worse than a Republican. -- D.M.T., Texarkana, Texas

Biden is doing great, even though the Republicans are doing nothing for the people. The Trumplicans that can't think, act, or serve their constituents without the loser Trump to bless them. So sad that the Republicans have become a bunch of "kiss a****" to Trump, a loser that wants to destroy America. Just look at Cruz, he will sell his father and wife out to a appease Trump. So sad! Like they say "if you want to live like a Republican, you have to vote like a Democrat!" God Bless America, against Trumplicans. -- R.K., Texarkana, Texas

Under Joe Biden's "leadership," if you want to call it that, inflation is at a 40 year high. He stopped completion of a border wall and illegal border crossings are at record highs. He canceled the Keystone pipeline but lifted sanctions on the Russian natural gas pipeline. He pulled troops out of Afghanistan before he evacuated hundreds of Americans and thousands of our allies. The only reason he was elected is that he is not Donald Trump and he sold people on the idea that he would somehow end the Covid pandemic. Biden is a corrupt 50-year politician who has enriched his family at our expense. He will go down in history along with Jimmy Carter as one of the worst presidents in modern history. -- L.O., Texarkana, Texas

- Biden is the worst President ever. He has no clue what to do.

- Lousy job everything has gone up in price if you can find want you want.

- Your kidding right that's a joke to even call him president he has done nothing for this country only against it. Does not deserve the title of president.

- Sure ain't liking the price of gas right now

- Show me someone who actually supports what's going on in our country right now... I'll wait

- I hope we get better candidates in 2024 . Besides the ones we already had and have.

- Worst ever

- I hate that I voted for him. I should have voted for Trump a 2nd time. I thought I didn't like Trump til this guy came along.

- Biden has been the worst train wreck this country has ever had to put up with. He has almost totally wiped out all the gains we had made in the 4 years before he stole office. I hope all those who voted for him are proud of themselves.

- By every measure our country is doing better under Biden, MAGA land hates him because MAGA media tells them to.

- Worst president ever and getting worse by the day! 3rd world totalitarian country here we come.

- Yes I voted for him think he is doing his best under the circumstances he inherited, and what he has been faced with, lets just keep praying for him.

- Worse president ever.

- I dunno. I stopped paying attention to what the president was doing when the president's Twitter was no longer on the news for saying wild, completely false things. It's been nice.
