EDITORIAL/Hot Day, Cold Drink: National Daiquiri Day tempting in summer heat, but be safe

You may have noticed a couple of thiings while reading today's newspaper.

One was a story on Page 3A about some places in town where a thirsty adult can find a frozen daquiri. The popular cocktail is said to have originated in Cuba around the turn of the century as a way to beat the tropical heat. Originally lime-based, it now comes in a wide variety of flavors and variations.

The second thing that might have caught your eye was the weather forecast at the bottom of Page 1A -- the high temperature is expected to be 104 degrees!

That's the kind of heat that makes a daiquiri sound pretty tempting. Especially when you consider this is National Daiquiri Day, a fun bit of fiction crafted no doubt by the rum industry and celebrated every July 19.

If you do decide to indulge, play it safe and do not drive. It may be National Daiquiri Day, but the police don't get to take off. So they will be watching.

Or maybe just enjoy your cocktail of the day without alcohol at all. The "virgin" versions are just as tasty, but without the peril.

Here's hoping you can stay cool today -- and have fun doing so.
