EDITORIAL: One More Hurdle: Supporters of recreational marijuana s step closer

It looks like Arkansans may find out this week whether or not they will be able to vote for or against legalizing marijuana for recreational use come the November elections.

The Arkansas Secretary of State's office last week certified that supporters of a ballot initiative to put the question to voters had gathered enough valid signatures to meet the threshold.

One more hurdle remains. The state Board of Election Commissioners has to give it's approval to how the initiative is presented and formally titled on the ballot. The commissioners are likely to consider the initiative on Wednesday.

Then it will be up to Arkansas voters.

The proposal would allow those age 21 and up to possess up to an ounce of marijuana purchased from a licensed seller. It would also increase the number of licensed dispensaries from 40 to 120 and end the state tax of 10.5% on medical marijuana and impose it on recreational weed instead.

Should it make it past the election commissioners, we wouldn't be surprised if voters give it their support.

But you never know. Those opposed to recreational pot may decide to turn out and take a stand. Stay tuned.
