TEXARKANA, Texas -- A Hooks, Texas, man indicted on 16 felony charges involving sexual abuse of children and bestiality is set for a pretrial hearing July 6.

Cody Austin Wright, 34, will appear before 202nd District Judge John Tidwell, who also could set a date for trial.

Wright came to the attention of the Bowie County Sheriff's Office when the mother of a 14-year-old girl reported in May 31, 2021, that her daughter made an outcry of sexual abuse, according to a probable cause affidavit. The girl told a forensic interviewer that Wright began molesting her when she was 9.

The girl reported that she had recently discovered Wright installed two-way mirrored film on windows cut into the wall in the bathroom where she showered during visits. The girl allegedly noticed a scratch in the film while showering and reported seeing Wright's hand operating his cell phone.

Following his arrest on a sexual assault charge involving the 14-year-old, investigators conducted a search of Wright's home. They allegedly found the recording equipment described by the girl.

Investigators also seized Wright's cellphone.

Several videos and pictures of the 14-year-old showering in Wright's home were allegedly found on the phone. Also allegedly found on the phone were Google searches Wright allegedly made on May 10. One search involving sexual conduct with a dog.

A home video dated May 10 found on Wright's cellphone allegedly depicted a man having sex with a female dog.

During the investigation, a Bowie County detective determined that Wright had been the subject of a report to Child Protective Services in September 2015 involving an 8-year-old girl. The girl allegedly told a teacher that Wright "was having her watch porn with him."

No charges resulted from the 2015 referral to CPS.

About a year ago, the girl and her older sister met with a forensic interviewer.

"(The younger sister) advised Wright would wake her up, take her to his room, strip her and watch porn," according to an affidavit.

The younger girl reported that Wright would ask her to "act out" things occurring in a pornographic video and that she "begged him" not to sexually abuse her in other ways.

Wright has been charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child involving the 14-year-old who came forward May 31. That offense is punishable by five to 99 years or life in prison.

Wright has also been charged with possession with the intent to promote child pornography. He faces two to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Wright has been charged with two counts of indecency with a child involving the older report to Child Protective Services. If found guilty, he faces two to 10 years on each charge.

Wright's total bail was set at $1.45 million. He remains in the Bowie County jail.
