TEXARKANA, Texas -- The new Texarkana Outpatient Clinic built at the northwest corner of Summerhill Road and Moores Lane could open soon.

Greg Beck, president of the local chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America, said Sunday the clinic is tentatively set to open in July.

The 21,000-square-foot building, which is still awaiting some furnishings, will offer almost twice as much space as the current 11,000-square-foot VA Clinic in the 900 block of Realtor.

The building also will feature 27 primary patient care rooms, along with women's health care, mental health services, audiology, optometry and lab services. There also will be basic radiology and physical therapy.

Mark James Construction Co. began construction on the $5 million building, in the 5700 block of Summerhill, in June 2020

About 5,000 patients are registered for care at the present clinic, and 1,000 more are anticipated to be added once the new clinic opens. The current VA Clinic logs about 22,000 visits annually, which could double with the new facility.

The city's original veterans clinic opened in 1994 on Summerhill Road south of the new building.
