MAUD, Texas -- A 50-year-old man has been arrested in Bowie County on a murder charge after allegedly shooting his brother-in-law.

Billy John Scott is being held in the Bowie County jail. His bail has not yet been set, according to a news release from the Bowie County Sheriff's Office.

At 7:54 p.m. Tuesday, Bowie County deputies were dispatched to a shooting in the 500 block of Birch Street. Capt. David Grable found Larry Dewayne Kirby lying in the roadway and being attended to by the person who had called 911.

Kirby, 39, of Maud, was bleeding badly so a tourniquet was placed on his leg to improve his chances of survival, according to the release.

LifeNet personnel arrived and took over life-saving measures, but Kirby died.

Kirby reportedly told the 911 caller that he had been shot by his brother-in-law, later identified as Scott, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Scott had left the scene prior to deputies arriving, the release states. He was contacted by telephone and arrangements were made for his surrender. He was taken into custody without incident
