TEXARKANA, Texas --A woman accused of assaulting an 87-year-old dementia patient at Cornerstone Retirement in Texarkana while working as a caretaker is being held in the Bowie County jail.

Sharee Bryant, 48, was arrested Friday by Texarkana, Texas, police on a charge of injury to an elderly or disabled individual. The alleged assault was reported by a Cornerstone administrator to police the day before, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Bryant's bail is set at $200,000.

The son of an 87-year-old woman suffering from dementia installed a camera in his mother's room at the nursing home after noticing bruises on her. The camera allegedly recorded Bryant entering the room and slapping the elderly and infirm woman "without provocation."

"(The alleged victim) was struck with enough force to cause her torso to lean back and she reached up and placed her hand on her face as if she was in pain," the affidavit states.

The woman's dementia prevents her from recalling the assault though the video allegedly shows the "slap caused her pain," according to the affidavit.

The affidavit states the woman's son, who has power of attorney for his mother, requested that charges be filed against Bryant.

The affidavit lists March 9 as the date of the alleged assault. A Texarkana, Texas, police officer met with the Cornerstone administrator and the alleged victim's son March 24, the day the assault was reported to police by the administrator.

If convicted of injury to an elderly or disabled person, Bryant faces two to 10 years in prison.
