Juvenile arrested in Hope homicide

HOPE, Ark. -- A juvenile has been arrested in connection with the April 10 homicide of a Hope man at a local park.

On Thursday, officers with the Hope Police Department arrested a 16-year-old male juvenile on one count of first degree murder and one count of engaging in a violent criminal group activity, according to a news release from the Hope Police Department.

The juvenile is being held in a juvenile facility, and the investigation is still ongoing, according to the news release.

Upon arrival at Northside Park April 10, officers found one person lying in the parking lot near the entrance to the park with an apparent gunshot wound. That person was identified as Bernard McCarthur Jr., 24, of Hope. McCarthur was transported to Wadley Regional Medical Center in Hope, where he later died.

Another victim, who had been transported to the hospital by a personal vehicle, was identified as Stevaughn Johnson, 26, of Hope. He was transported to Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana, Texas.
