State track meet begins today

AUSTIN -- All of the the local and area UIL state track & field meet qualifiers compete today at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas. The 4A and 3A portion of the state championships is scheduled for today, with 5A and 2A Friday and 6A and 1A on Saturday.

Liberty-Eylau has two relay teams qualified on the girls side, as well as Jeavon Stewart making his third state championship appearance in the 100 hurdles. Stewart's 14.69 has him seeded third in the event, with running finals set for 5 p.m. and field events at 9 a.m.

Liberty-Eylau's girls 4x100 relay team of Indiyah Aldridge, Laqukeisha Jeffery, Nevaeh Hill, Janiya Sanders, Myah Hurd and Lakyn Johnson are the second seed with a tI've of 48.5, and the same Lady Leopards make up the 4x200 relay, which is seeded third in 1:42.02.

Atlanta, Redwater, Paul Pewitt and Queen City will be represented in the Class 3A competition.

The Rabbs' 4x100 relay team of Isaiah Chandler, JaBranden Wells, Zakyus Jackson, Markeylin Batton, Ahmani Jackson and Cooper Swanson qualified with the best time at 42.16

Atlanta's 4x400 relay team of Chandler, Wells, Matthew Cauley, Eli Riojas, Stacy Darty and Cooper Swanson is also the top seed at 3:22.37, and Darty is also competing in the triple jump with a qualifying distance of 45-2.

David McKeever of Redwater will compete in the boys long jump after clearing 21-10 3/4, while Paul Pewitt's Isaac Hodges goes for gold in the pole vault with a height of 13-6 coming in.

Toni McCellon, representing the Queen City Lady Bulldogs, will compete in the girls 300 meter hurdles. She qualified in 46.13.
