TEXARKANA, Texas -- First-timers and returning customers alike flocked to family business Body of Art for a Friday the 13th tattoo.

Kara May runs the shop on Richmond Road, where she and her artists create several different designs for the rare event.

"They're kind of usually like little spooky things and little ghosts and most everything includes the number 13," May said.

May isn't sure of the connection between tattoo shops and Friday the 13th, but she thinks that tattoos and the dreaded date hold a certain level of spookiness that people find appealing.

"We did about 100 tattoos for people last time we had it," May said. "This is the only one this year. The next time is January and October for next year."

May thinks that Friday the 13th brings in people that normally don't get bigger tattoos, and sometimes people come in as a novel outing for the day.

May and her children, William and Mackenzie, find the event special. Mackenzie takes the day off from her regular job to assist the shop when Friday the 13th rolls around.

"They're a lot of fun to get to do," William said. "It's nice when it gets busy, and these designs are simple so you get to goof around with the clients a bit more."
