Leopards, Bullard clash in one game

WINNSBORO, Texas -- Liberty-Eylau and Bullard square off in a winner-take-all Region II-4A quarterfinal baseball game today at Winnsboro High School.

First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

The Leopards (20-11-1) have won four straight in the postseason. L-E swept Brownsboro in the area round.

The Panthers (20-13) have a 5-game win streak after sweeping Canton last week.

"We wanted to play a series; Bullard wanted just one game, and they won the coin flip," Leopards head coach Zach Fowler said. "They're always a talented team, can swing it 1 through 9 in the lineup, and they have a lefty (pitcher) who has been really good this year.

"We're going to have to have good at-bats and make him throw a lot more pitches than he normally does. Just one game, it's hard to use your depth, but we need to try to make them use theirs."

WT Jones and Gage Bellatti have been the 1-2 starters for the Leopards in the playoffs, and Cal Jones pitched the only Game 3 L-E has played.

With Bellatti on the hill, Cal Jones plays shortstop and WT is at second. Britain Pipes plays third, Xander Worthey is at first, and Dylan Garton is behind the plate. The outfield features Krayson Battle in left, Braylon Blair in center and Ron Garza in right.

"The key is going to keep them from scoring," Fowler said. "Offensively, we need to scrap a few runs across, have competitive at-bats, and defensively and with our pitching, be really stingy. We need to treat every inning like it's the last inning, don't let them have any big innings and just keep them off the scoreboard."

The game will be broadcast on The Fan 107.9 FM. The winner advances to next week's regional semifinals to play either Van Alstyne or Celina.
