Inmate in federal lockup allegedly possessed 60 SIM cards

TEXARKANA, Texas -- An inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Texarkana has been charged with 60 misdemeanor counts for possession of SIM cards.

Jose Salvador Maldonado, 49, is charged in an information with possessing 60 SIM cards while at the federal lockup April 10. The information lists each count with the number associated with the individual SIM cards, "which are devices used by a user of commercial mobile services."

Each of the 60 counts is punishable by up to a year in federal prison and a fine up to $100,000. A special assessment of $25 is possible on each count as well.

Any sentence imposed for the contraband charges must be served consecutively to any term already being served.

Bureau of Prisons records indicate that Maldonado is currently being held at FCI Texarkana. The contraband case is currently pending in the Texarkana Division of the Eastern District of Texas.
