Hughes Springs take on Tigers in regional finals

MARSHALL, Texas -- Hughes Springs tangles with Mount Vernon in a Region II-3A championship 3-game series starting with Game 1 at East Texas Baptist University's Taylor Field today at 6:30 p.m.

Game 2 is back at Taylor Field on Saturday at 3 p.m. with a Game 3, if needed, to follow.

The Lady Mustangs (29-4-1) won the District 15-3A championship and the Lady Tigers (28-8-1) are the champions from District 13-3A.

"Mount Vernon is scrappy, has team speed and play small ball," Hughes Springs head coach Tisha Thompson said. "We have to come out and jump on their pitcher early. We can't afford to strike out. We have to put the ball in play hard. We want to get lots of runner on base and cause lots of havoc."

The Lady Mustangs are coming off a 2-1 series win over Prairiland and Mount Vernon defeated Grandview, 2-1, in a 3-game series.

"The kids have no quit in them; that is what a team needs to make a good playoff run," Thompson said. "We've already come from behind in some big games and the kids never quit.

"The kids are pumped up and ready to go. Mount Vernon is only 45 minutes down the road, and many of the kids play summer ball together. We are familiar with them and they are familiar with us. Neither one of us have any secrets."

The winner clinches a spot in the 3A state tournament with the semifinals Wednesday, June 1.
