TEXARKANA, Texas -- Residents can get free rabies vaccinations and city licenses for their dogs and cats Saturday at Spring Lake Park.

The sixth annual Bark at the Park event will also offer other vaccinations for a minimal fee. Veterinarians and animal control staff will be onsite to answer questions and provide pet care advice. Texarkana, Arkansas, animal control will also be there to license Arkansas-side pets for a fee.

"Experts agree that widespread use of vaccinations within the last century has prevented death and disease in millions of animals. Vaccinations protect your pet from highly contagious and deadly diseases and improve your pet's overall quality of life," according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

City ordinances require dogs and cats 3 months old or older in Texarkana, Texas, or 6 months old or older in Texarkana, Arkansas, to be vaccinated against rabies and licensed. Violations are misdemeanors in both cities.

(Bark in the Park is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the pavilion, aka the Kylee Sullivan Dog Park, in Spring Lake Park, 4303 N. Park Road. For more information, call 903-798-3535.)
