Texas High girls outlast Terrell on hardcourt

TEXARKANA, Texas -- Texas High started and finished strong against Terrell in a girls varsity basketball game Tuesday at Tiger Center.

The host Lady Tigers dominated the opening minutes of the game and the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, after Terrell took the lead for the first time in the third period, before THS held on for a 65-60 win.

Serenity Collins poured in eight of her 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead Texas High's scorers. Anasia Wilcox and Karasha Hayes added 12 points each, and Taryne Stiger had 10 points. Wilcox also pulled down 23 rebounds, and Kyla Reed added 11 boards.

Tenaha Turner led Terrell with 20 points, Braelyn Brown had 14 points, Hope Burks scored 13 and Kmora Moore scored eight and matched Brown with nine rebounds apiece.

THS won the battle of the glass, 55-34, but Terrell had just 18 turnovers compared to 31 by the home team.

After trailing the entire first half, Terrell opened the third quarter on a 6-point run to take its first lead. There were four tie scores and five lead changes in the period with the visiting Tigers holding a 50-48 advantage to start the fourth quarter.

The host Tigers regained their early dominance to start the final quarter, rattling off the first 10 points to go up eight points with 6:14 left to play.

With 3:31 remaining, Terrell cut the deficit to five points (60-55) and it was three (63-60) with just 58 ticks left.

Texas High cruised out to a 15-3 lead early in the game, but the visitors rallied back with an 11-2 streak to get within three points (17-14). THS led 21-16 at the first break after Terrell drained a long jumper at the buzzer.

Texas High scored the first four points of the second quarter and regained a 10-point cushion (31-21) with 2:37 remaining in the first half. Terrell cut the margin to 33-29 at intermission.
