TEXARKANA, Texas -- HandsOn Texarkana is getting an extra helping hand from food delivery company DoorDash to bring groceries to senior citizens.

The collaboration began about two weeks ago.

"We received an email from DoorDash about the DoorDash program," said administrative assistant and program coordinator Tera Savage. "We watched a webinar and thought it would be a great program."

Savage said with DoorDash making deliveries for the nonprofit organization, office employees can focus on managing the agencies programs and scheduling for rides for clients.

"We did a test run for one of our longtime clients that has been in our program for a long time so we could get her feedback," Savage said. "We knew she'd give us honest feedback. She said they were very friendly, and we've never had any issues with the Dashers."

Savage said the program is fully free to HandsOn and that the drivers get paid.

"This is their way of giving back to the community," Savage said. "This will help free us up and potentially help us expand more."

Savage said the organization is in desperate need of drivers to take clients to and from doctor's appointments, the grocery store and to pick up prescriptions. As for tangible goods, clients are in need of paper plates, paper towels, toilet paper, laundry soap and dish soap.

"Anyone who wants to become a volunteer driver just needs to give us a call first, as we're in and out of office as clients need us," Savage said. "They can come by, fill out a short one-page application. They give us their insurance and license, then they're ready to go."
