Trail runners will be thrashing through the forests of Atlanta's city park track Saturday, hoping to win the trophy cup in a first annual Trail Grinders run.

The benefit runs of 5K, 10K and 18 miles are meant to highlight research into the rare and mysterious illness Superficial Siderosis, of which a local member of the race sponsoring family suffers.

Tanya and Greg Beers, owners of Caffe Crema special coffee shop, are hosting the event.

"We still want registrations," Tanya said. "Interested runners may contact me by phone at 903-571-8213 or here at the store 903-799-8241. Our store hours are 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 to 3 on Saturday. Or show up on race day before the 7 a.m. start."

The trail run starts at the pond near the Atlanta City Park baseball fields.

Informal activities, food and good times will be held day-long for the friends and families of the runners. Health Care Express will have a foam game activity. Jill Nicole will lead yoga activities. Several other vendors and plenty of hydration liquids as well as hot dogs will be available.

"Our goal is to make this a good time for a good goal," Tanya said. "Maybe next we can have a half marathon."

The Trail Grinder run has its own original logo and is called the battle of the bean. It's a first annual coffee run hosted by Caffe Crema. The trophies are specially designed mugs in various sizes, and t-shirts also sport the logo.

"We're just trying to give back," Tanya said. "Trying to help Atlanta help others."

In recent days, the Atlanta Tourism committee has become a sponsor. They are joining other sponsors Jeffrey Hanson, Advance Spine and Sports and Rehabilitation, David and Krista Iadarola, Red River Credit Union, Ray Harp Jewelers, Health Care Express, Bob's Printing, The Copper Pine, State Bank, Wesley House, Made in the Shade, Family Eye Clinic, Yoga with Jill Nicole, Brookshires and CHRISTUS Health.
