EDITORIAL/Smile for the Camera: Arkansas cracking down on work zone speeding

We've all seen the highway signs warning motorists to reduce speed when road workers are present. Especially right here on I-30 where roadwork never seems to stop.

The lower sped limits in work zones serve a very important purpose -- to keep road workers safe while they are doing their job.

But some drivers ignore the lower posted limits and continue to speed on, without a second thought about the workers' safety -- or even their lives.

Well, drivers in Arkansas will soon have a new incentive to obey the lower limits.

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed legislation allowing automated speed cameras in work zones.

But you won't get a ticket in the mail like with cameras at traffic lights or toll booths. No, these will transmit an image in real time to a waiting police officer at the end of the work zone. You'll get pulled over on the spot.

The law takes effect in August. So if you tend to have a heavy foot, you might as well get used to obeying work zone speed limits now.

You'll save some money. And , more importantly, keep road workers safe.
