TEXARKANA, Texas -- Gowns, crowns and sparkles are just a few things that will be part of a pageant slated for Sept 16 at Bright Star Theater.
Venture Watson, a coach at Arkansas Middle School and former pageant queen, is preparing to host her annual citywide summer fun pageant. This year's theme is Barbie.
The pageant will hand out 10 queen titles, 10 supreme titles and cash prizes, Watson said.
Venture said the pageant goes beyond outward appearance. The focus is on girl empowerment, self-love, confidence and positivity.
"Honestly, I really enjoy seeing the girls' personalities, but I also love giving back to our community," Watson said. "My grandmother was a giver, and I feel like I am following in her footsteps."
Proceeds from the pageant will go toward Everetha's Angel Scholarship. Everetha is Watson's late grandmother, whom Watson said was an angel on earth.
"Last year we gave away $3,500 in scholarships, and this year we want to try and match that again," Watson said.
The pageant is open to all age groups, from newborns to senior adults. Competition categories include beauty wear, also known as evening gown; outfit related to the pageant theme; and personality.
Watson has been organizing pageants for over 10 years. She plans to hold more pageants between now and May to continue raising scholarship funds.
"I consider the people in my pageant to be like family," Watson said. "Most of them continue to come back every year."
