Prep Basketball Roundup: Pleasant Grove wins 5 straight at Redwater tournament

REDWATER, Texas -- Pleasant Grove's boys wrapped up the Redwater tournament with its fifth consecutive win, taking down Gospel Light Academy, 51-35, on Saturday morning at Dragon Gym.

The duo of Justin Casteel and Torion Phillips proved to be vital again, with Casteel leading the Hawks with 18 points and Phillips adding eight to the mix.

Pleasant Grove will travel to Henderson on Tuesday night.



Pleasant Grove wins two

REDWATER, Texas -- Pleasant Grove's varsity boys basketball program won its fourth straight at the Redwater tournament after defeating Avinger and host Redwater on Friday night at Dragon Gym.

In the first game, the Hawks dismantled Avinger, 81-17, behind the play of Jaymon Wheeler and Justin Casteel. Wheeler finished with 18 points while Casteel had 16.

Redwater played Pleasant Grove a little closer in the second game, but the Hawks escaped with a 51-43 triumph to end the night. Torion Phillips led all scorers with 22 points and teammate Keighston King added 16.

Pleasant Grove was back in action on Saturday morning against Gospel Light Academy.


McLeod 64, Harleton 22

SIMMS, Texas -- McLeod put the game away in the first half and continued to pour on points after intermission to put away Harleton, 64-22, at the James Bowie tournament on Friday at Pirates Gym.

Colton Spence netted 21 points in the win, followed by Grayson Owens' 11 and Jaxon Smith's 10 points. Kannon Dempsey wreaked havoc as well, finishing with eight points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists.

McLeod (8-0), which advanced to Saturday's championship game, had 24 steals in the victory.


Hughes Springs 57, Ore City 37

HUGHES SPRINGS, Texas -- Maverick Main poured in 18 points for Ore City, but it wasn't enough as Hughes Springs defended its home court for a 20-point victory.

For the second game in a row, Main netted 18 points in a loss.

Hughes Springs' AJ Morton led the Mustangs with 17 points.



McLeod 36, Maud 11

SIMMS, Texas -- A dominating second quarter helped McCleod girls secure a 36-11 win over Maud during the James Bowie tournament at Pirates Gym.

Kenslee Cross scored a game-high 16 points in the win, while Madison Blair tallied 10.

With the win, McLeod (6-6) advanced to the tournament championship on Saturday.
