TEXARKANA, Texas -- Some of the best teams and players from Texas, Arkansas and Tennessee participated in the 16 games at the annual Red River Hoopfest Friday and Saturday at Texas High's Tiger Center.
Two of the more interesting, and awaited, games were the matches between Texas High and Arkansas High, and the Fouke Lady Panthers against Rice with its outstanding senior Saniya Burks, who is headed to West Texas State University next year.
Fouke overcame the 49 points by Burks to win that contest, 71-68.
In the Texas High contest, the Tigers defeated Arkansas High, 55-39.
It was a close game for most of the contest with Texas High in command most of the way.
The Razorbacks' only lead was 17-16 midway in the second quarter.
Texas High led, 14-13, at the end of the first period, but Arkansas High's Quave Ross led all scorers with eight points.
After Arkansas High took that brief lead, the Tigers' Alex Orr made four-of-four free throws to regain the lead, 20-17.
Orr came off the bench to spark the Tigers with nine points in the second period as Texas High led, 27-24, at halftime.
Jimon Haynes took over most of the scoring for the Tigers in the third period with 11 points as Texas High led, 43-34, at the end of third quarter.
Texas High maintained its big lead throughout the final period for the easy victory.
Haynes led the Tigers with 21 points and Orr ended up 10. Nine players scored for the Tigers.
After Ross' eight points in the first period, the Tigers limited him to just 10 points, the only player in double figures for Arkansas.
As the final score would indicate, there was much for both teams to improve upon in all phases of the contest.
The most glaring statistic was the 62 turnovers in the contest, with Texas High committing 35 and Arkansas High 27.
