EDITORIAL/Safety Concerns? Bill would ban polling places at Texas colleges, universities

A Texas state Republican lawmakers thinks it's a bad idea to have polling place on college and university campuses.

And she's filed a bill to ban them.

State Rep. Carrie Isaac of Wimberley says its a matter of public safety.

"Here in Texas, we have one of the longest early voting periods of any state in the nation, two weeks of early voting. I don't believe it's wise that we invite people onto our campuses that would not otherwise be there," she told Austin NBC affiliate KXAN.

Isaac said the proposed ban would not keep college students from voting. Schools could bus them to polling places, for example, she said.

We wonder.

In the Lone Star State, polling places pop up in all sorts of locations. Elementary, middle and high schools, for example. Churches. Community centers. Municipal buildings.

But somehow college and university campuses pose more of a risk? Somehow we don't think so.

We don't want to be cynical here. We don't want to suggest that the proposed ban on polling places at colleges and universities has anything to do with fears about which party might garner more student votes.

Let's just say the legislation is a bad idea. We want our young folks to make voting a regular part of their lives once they reach 18. It's better to make voting easier for the students among them than to make it more difficult. Especially for no real reason.
