NEW BOSTON, Texas -- A man convicted of child sex assault in North Carolina pleaded guilty earlier in May to aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child in Bowie County.

Lance Dewayne Johnson, 52, of New Boston, has been sentenced to 40 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for the aggravated sexual assault charge and 20 years for the charge of indecency, according to court records. He was sentenced by Bowie County Judge John Tidwell.

The sentences will run concurrently, according to court records.

Johnson was indicted by a Bowie County grand jury in December 2021 on four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child involving a 13-year-old boy and two counts of sexual assault of a child involving a 16-year-old boy. He also was indicted on a felony charge of evidence tampering.

Johnson was convicted in 2008 of sexual misconduct involving boys in North Carolina.

Johnson was arrested Nov. 3, 2021, by New Boston Police Department on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child involving the 13-year-old boy. He was released from jail the following day after posting a $150,000 bond.

Within hours of his release, Johnson was arrested on two counts of sexual assault of a child involving the 16-year-old boy. Bail on those charges was set at $150,000 apiece.

Johnson's bond on the initial charge was revoked by Tidwell after the allegation of evidence tampering.

Johnson could have faced 99 years or life in prison on each of the four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
