TO THE EDITOR:
My favorite line in the movie "Bridge On The River Kwai", comes at the end of the film. When the bridge is blown and the train crashes into the river, the camp doctor, standing on a hill not far away, stands and shouts, "Madness, madness!"
A librarian in Louisiana is being threatened with termination as well as physical violence for setting up a display at the public library for LGBTQ teens. She could lose her job as well as her life. A prosecutor in Michigan is threatening felony charges against a librarian for the book, "Gender Queer: A Memoir." At least four other states have bills pending that would allow school librarians to be charged with crimes for allowing students to check out "objectionable books".
Meanwhile, two people were killed and 5 others injured in a shooting at a graduation ceremony in Richmond, VA. The dead include an 18-year old graduate and his 36-year old father.
The shooter's 2nd Amendment rights are secure. The librarian's 1st Amendment rights are not.
Madness, madness.
