EDITORIAL/Loosening The Law? Should Texas allow retail sale of canned cocktail on Sunday?

One of Texas' last blue laws may get a bit less blue if a couple of state lawmakers have their way.

Right now, state law allows beer and wine to be sold at retail in groceries and convenience stores on Sunday in jurisdictions where alcohol sales are legal. Hard liquor, by contrast, can only be sold by liquor stores and they must close on the Sabbath.

But bills have been introduced in the state Senate and House to weaken that law by allowing stronger drink.

The bills would allow pre-mixed. ready-to-drink cocktails containing hard spirits such as rum, vodka or tequila to be sold in groceries and convenience stores on Sunday

Liquor stores would remain closed on Sunday and sales of bottles of hard liquor would still be off limits. The proposals just allow packaged cocktails -- though when you start to chip away at a law, it's usually just the first step.

Supporters point out the canned cocktails are comparable in alcohol content to beer and wine and the proposals set the top iimit for Sunday sales at 17%.

So we want to know what you think. Should Texas grocery and convenience stores be allowed to sell ready-to-drink packaged cocktails on Sunday or not? Do you think the larger ban on Sunday liquor sales will be repealed anytime soon?

Last Week: Wish List?

Last week's question was about restaurant chains. If you could pick one -- just one -- fast food or restaurant chain to open in Texarkana, what would it be?
