Man dies after Sunday shooting that injured 6-year-old in Texarkana, Arkansas

Police seek public’s help in finding shooter

TEXARKANA, Ark. -- Gunfire at a large gathering Sunday evening left a Wake Village, Texas, man dead and a child with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Michael Clark, 24, died of his injuries late Sunday at CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital, the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department said Monday in a news release.

No arrests have been made, and the shooter or shooters remain unknown to police.

About 7:10 p.m. Sunday, patrol officers were dispatched to Grove and Pinehurst after receiving a traffic complaint.

"Officers observed a volume of vehicles estimated between 60 to 100 cars that were lined up on the streets in both traffic lanes due to a community event going on in the neighborhood. The officers in the area observed no violations or issues other than the large volume of vehicles on the roadway," the news release states.

Police were monitoring traffic in the area when they heard gunshots about 8:08 p.m. near the intersection of Grove and Pinehurst. At the same time, 911 dispatchers began receiving calls about gunfire.

"The officers located the area where the shooting may have occurred and discovered a vehicle with bullet holes and spent casings nearby. No victims were located at the scene," the release states.

At 8:13 p.m., 911 calls were made about a vehicle accident at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Hazel Street. The accident reportedly involved some of the people at the shooting scene.

"They were transporting a 6-year-old child who had been struck in the leg by a bullet fired by an unknown suspect at the scene of the shooting on Grove and Pinehurst streets," the release states.

The child was taken by another person from the crash scene to a local hospital, and later transferred to a Little Rock hospital for further treatment.

About an hour later, at 9:25 p.m., CHRISTUS St. Michael called police to report a male who was in the emergency room with a gunshot wound.

"Further investigation revealed the victim had been shot earlier near the intersection of Grove and Pinehurst streets," the release states.

The male was identified as Clark, who later died.

Cpl. Les Munn, TAPD's public information officer, said Monday to the Gazette that not many witnesses have come forward with information on the shootings. However, based on initial investigations, the child and Clark do not appear to be related.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Criminal Investigation Division at 903-798-3154, or to email Detective Dakota Easley at [email protected].
