EDITORIAL | Monument to the Unborn? Is such a memorial appropriate for the state Capitol grounds?

This week, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed a law allowing a "monument to the unborn" to be placed on the grounds of the state Capitol.

The memorial would be dedicated to fetuses aborted in Arkansas before the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade last year. The design and construction would be paid for with private fund. Afterward the state would maintain the monument.

The idea has sparked controversy, even among some pro-life state lawmakers. Opponents say it amounts to little more than gloating and will spur even more division on abortion. They also say such a monument has no place on public land that belongs to all Arkansans.

"Public memorials to our nation's wars where we face an external threat are right and proper," state Rep. Steve Unger, R-District 19, told ABC News. "A memorial to an ongoing culture war where we seem to be shooting at each other is not."

We want to know what you think. Is a monument to the unborn approriate for the state Capitol grounds? Or should such a monument not be placed on public land?

Last Week: Spring or Fall?

Last week's question was about the Four States Fair and Rodeo. Do you prefer the Four States Fair in the spring or would you prefer the event returned to it's fall roots?

Put it back in the fall but later in September or first part of October. No one pays any attention to it in the spring. -- B.W., Texarkana, Arkansas
