TEXARKANA, Ark. -- With the first three of four construction phases on Texarkana Regional Airport's 40,000-square-foot passenger terminal nearly complete, the project's opening date is slated for June 2024.

The roof on the terminal is in place and the building's metal exterior is completed, Airport Executive Aviation Director Paul Mehrlich said Thursday.

Phase 3 continues, with the structure's two floors now being equipped for office installments, lighting, electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling. The work is projected to completed by late summer 2023.

"Presently, the building's Phase 3 interior is now well under way on both of the building's two floors," Mehrlich said.

Once complete, the building will contain passenger elevators and escalators, as well as a luggage carousel.

Mehrlich said Phase 4 of the $49 million project will include the placement of two passenger jet boarding bridges.

The airport also will install about 333 more customer parking spaces along with additional landscaping, Mehrlich said.

Merlich said plans remain in the works to lengthen the airport's primary runway from 6,600 feet to 7,100 feet.

The terminal likely will be named after a prominent Texarkana person or family connected to aviation and the airport, the executive director said.
