TEXARKANA, Texas -- A townhouse construction project in western Texarkana is adding 12 more units of housing space for area residents.

The 2B Builders' project is on U.S. Highway 67 (Seventh Street), just west of the intersection with Farm to Market Road 991. Work began in early April and is expected to be complete in another six months, 2B's Brandon Taylor said Monday to the Gazette.

Taylor co-owns the construction firm with Brad Meador.

Each multistory unit, which will be under 2B ownership, will have two bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms and an attached garage. Rent will be about $1,500 a month, Taylor said.

The units also will feature granite countertops and stainless steel appliances.

Construction on the townhouses, which are just yards away from a Dollar General, has been slightly hampered by recent rains. The muddy ground makes it difficult for concrete trucks to enter the site and pour the slabs, Taylor said.

The site's location along a busy highway and proximity to an intersection also affect the pace of construction, since the delivery of dirt and other materials has to be adjusted to avoid interfering with traffic, Taylor said.

For now, one of two townhouse slabs has been poured, and plastic culverts are on-site and waiting to be installed.

To the north, 2B is nearing the end of another townhouse project.

The firm is constructing20 units along University Boulevard, south of Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Each unit will be two bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths. Covered parking will be provided for residents.

A rental estimate for the University units was unavailable.
