Sevier County woman charged with shooting mother scheduled for hearing

De QUEEN, Ark. – A court date is scheduled June 1 for a Horatio, Arkansas, woman suspected of shooting her mother earlier this year.

Kaylee Cornett, 28, will appear in Sevier County Circuit Court for a pretrial hearing. Cornett was charged in March with felony counts of attempted murder and criminal attempt in the February shooting.

A jury trial is scheduled for June 21.

Sevier County deputies were dispatched to Sevier County Medical Center on Feb. 5 in reference to a woman with a gunshot wound to the left side of her head, according to an arrest affidavit.

Kimberly Jill Lorenc, 58, of Horatio, told investigators she was asleep in bed when she woke because of pain in her head. It was determined during medical treatment that the pain was a result of a gunshot wound, according to the affidavit.

Investigators received a search warrant for Lorenc's home on Central Road. Deputies also interviewed the only other resident of the home, who was identified as Cornett.

Cornett reportedly told investigators she found her mother bleeding from her head and then transported her to the hospital for treatment. She said no one else was inside the home when the incident occurred.

During their search, deputies allegedly discovered both a spent and live 9 mm bullet inside the home. A further search allegedly resulted in the discovery of two loaded firearms hidden inside the air conditioner in Cornett's room.

Cornett remains in the Sevier County jail on a $150,000 bond.
