TEXARKANA, Texas -- With the Perot Theater turning a century old next year, the venue's general manager is seeking a possible bond project to fund more than $10 million in upgrades in a bid to attract more entertainment.

Last week, R. Andrew Clark submitted a request to the City Council during a Fiscal Year 2024 budget meeting. Clark cited the need to replace the building's 40-year-old stage sound and lighting systems, along with its original 1924 wooden grid above the stage.

Clark's letter also mentioned upgrades are needed backstage and in the dressing rooms, box office and public restrooms.

"These capital improvements are critical to the future of the Perot Theater, in so far as not only attracting rentals, but also in providing locally supported or sponsored entertainment," Clark wrote. "For example, one of the main things we are asked to bring to the theater are Broadway shows, but unfortunately, the wooden grid won't support the weight of modern Broadway."

Clark wrote that the replacements and upgrades could exceed $10 million. He asked about the possibility of a $3 million bond project to go toward the expenses.

Clark and City Council members could not be reached for comment Saturday.
