TEXARKANA, Texas -- The Bowie County Extension Office will host a free beef cattle workshop on Sept. 26.

The workshop will focus on sharpening skills at selecting bulls to improve calf crops and developing strategies to retain cull cow value. The speaker for the evening will be Dr. Jason Banta, extension beef cattle specialist from Overton, Texas.

"Cow-calf producers often focus primarily on the calf side of the equation while paying less attention to the cull cow side and their overall contribution to income for the operation. Cull cows from the herd, in addition to the calves marketed each year, are important source of revenue and should be managed to return maximum value back to the ranch," according to a news release.

The Bowie County Livestock and Forage Committee is sponsoring the meeting. Twin Rivers Nutrition of DeKalb, Texas, will provide dinner.

(The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 26, at J&J Livestock Auction Company, 1813 S. Kings Hwy. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m., and the program will begin at 6 p.m. Attendees are asked to RSVP by Sept. 22 at 903-628-6702 or [email protected]. Persons with special needs are asked to contact organizers one week in advance so they can make necessary accommodations.)
