TEXARKANA, Ark. -- Texarkana Arkansas School District's Board of Education voted to modify the 2023-24 school calendar to allow for a day off for students on the day of the solar eclipse on April 8.

During a regular board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Becky Kessler noted that the modification comes as part of a recommendation from the Arkansas Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The modification involves switching April 1, which was originally chosen as a student/teacher holiday, to the day of the eclipse.

Kessler said the move will add 10 minutes to Arkansas High School's day, on account of the snow days, she said she did not anticipate the move causing significant difficulty with transportation.

The superintendent said the district will be distributing about 7,000 eclipse safety glasses to students and staff.
