UIL modifies plans, timeline

AUSTIN - The University Scholastic League issued a statement Friday that to follow the mandate issued by Gov. Greg Abbott for schools to remain closed through Monday, May 4, the UIL is "further modifying contingency plans and extending its previous announced timeline for completing UIL activities this academic school year," the release stated.

The UIL has continued to stand by its commitment that spring sports and UIL activities will be held, to some extent.

Previously, on the organization's website, district certifications, and various postseason rounds had been given alternative dates. On Friday, all dates for the individual athletic programs were listed as TBD (to be determined).

With schools closed until May 4, at the earliest, no UIL activities, including practices and in-person team meetings, will take place before this date.

"These modifications are based on schools resuming operations on Monday, May 4, 2020," the UIL announcement stated. "As that date approaches, UIL will monitor all available information and provide member schools with more specific guidance on district and post-season date adjustments related to this new extension."

The statement also allowed for time for teams and student athletes to becoming acclimated to practices before contests and games begin.

"All in-person practices, rehearsals and workouts remain suspended until further notice and remote instruction remains in place," the statement read. "UIL remains committed to providing a reasonable acclimatization period for rehearsals and practices to occur prior to resuming contests and games. All decisions remain flexible and will be consistent with the advice of local, state and federal officials."
