ACTIVE AGE | Volunteers are needed for Senior Transportation Program

Volunteers are needed for Hands on Texarkana's Senior Transportation Program.

The program has volunteer drivers provide transportation to older citizens who are disabled or don't have any means of transportation for trips to the doctor, grocery store or other necessary errands, said Hands On Executive Director Kathy Graves.

"This is one of our main programs and we rely heavily on volunteers," Graves said. "It's even more important now with Covid-19" she said.

Most volunteers for the transportation program are retired community residents, said Graves. Most of them spend about four or five hours a week volunteering but can also choose to do more hours, she said.

Volunteers can be any age and need to have a good driving record.

HandsOn Texarkana began as the Texarkana Volunteer Center in May 1969. The purpose is to make the community better through volunteerism. It is governed by a 21 member board and is a national partner with the Points of Light Foundation and an affiliate of HandsOn Network.

The mission statement is to serve the community in order to identify needs, inspire action through volunteerism and provide answers.
