EDITORIALS

Doing business without advertising is like winking at a pretty girl in the dark. You know what you're doing but nobody else does. ALSO - The housing problem is the big question in Texarkana. About all the "ready-to-wear" homes for sale have been taken. Building new ones is the only way now to take care of our population growth.

PROTECTED

FROM WITCHES

A bride and bridegroom in olden days used to be protected from the evil influence of warlocks and witches by using gray horses to pull the bridal carriage. To be lucky, they should not be married in a month the name of which contains the letter "A." Further, none of the wedding guests should be dressed in black or green. They will be unfortunate if the engagement ring has contained either opals or emeralds.

THE LENTEN SEASON

The penitential season is at hand and society for the most part has withdrawn from all gaieties. The Lenten period as observed by our Episcopal and Catholic friends is a beautiful custom which has impressed its sacredness upon all creeds. How fitting that the season preceding the anniversary of the Resurrection should be made a time for making one's heart a holy of holies with reflection, prayer and thanksgiving for that love which passeth all understanding as was manifested in the tragedy of the Cross. Time has not dimmed that tragedy and its subsequent triumph; and so this day finds a great number of folk true to the customs of those churches which keep the season holy and many others whose creed does not include such an observance but whose hearts are in tune.

EDITORIAL

It would be a good thing if the civic bodies of Texarkana would launch a rat killing drive. Set apart a "rat week"; enlist the Boy Scouts and all others in a war of extermination on the pestiferous rodents. Offer a bounty for rats. Aside from their destructiveness they are a menace to public health.
