TEXARKANA - With five musicians coming into the band with different influences, Rewind finds its niche with a great interpersonal mix and a love for classic rock.

Born from the ashes of previous projects, Rewind features the talents of Amy Frierson on vocals and keyboard, Randy Frierson on bass guitar, Steve Gammons on lead guitar and vocals, Doug Teague on drums and vocals and Billy Templeton on rhythm guitar and vocals.

With the Friersons' Harvest Rising project dissolving, Amy and Randy began pulling other musicians together about a year ago. This included placing an ad on social media, which brought them their lead guitarist, Randy explained.

"Steve is just a monster guitar player, so that worked out really well," Frierson said. He reached out to a drummer he saw on Facebook, and a jam session showed they had musical chemistry. Then came Templeton, formerly with Dusty Rose Band, to bring additional guitar magic to the mix.

"I think the thing that made it work so well was first off the personalities. All of us, our personalities just seem to mesh really well. We've all been around a while," Frierson said. The youngest band member is probably in his early 50s, he noted.

"We've all been around and we don't care for the drama and all that mess. We just want to play some good music, you know," Frierson said.

There's also diversity of influence: blues music, heavy rock and roll, classic rock from the 1970s and more.

"It's come together and allowed us to be able to put a mix of music together that where we can offer everyone a little something," Frierson said.

They may play a little country, but they like to call themselves a classic rock band, he says.

"At the same time we're doing what you would call some pop stuff that came about in the '70s and '80s," said Frierson, who names one of his favorite covers as "Can't Get Enough" by Bad Company.

You might also hear them play Fleetwood Mac, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Bonnie Raitt, Eagles and Pat Benetar. They aim to spread it out with the songs, he said. They also want to bring something new to the stage.

"We don't want to play a bunch of songs that everybody else is out there playing," Frierson said. "We want to kind of do something a little different that not everyone's doing."

Have you seen a local rock band playing songs with a flute? If not, check out Rewind and you will.

"My wife plays the flute, so we pick up things like 'Can't You See' by Marshall Tucker that has the flute in the beginning of it," Frierson said. That's a rarity around here, although people may have the flute sound on a keyboard, he said. The Men at Work song "Down Under" is another such song they'll play.

It was difficult being on hold as local music venues shut down for the coronavirus pandemic. They had to cancel shows. "This was going to be a really good year for our band until this covid stuff hit," Frierson said. So they're ready to get back to it.

There are a few opportunities to see Rewind in the coming months now that area venues are reopening for live music. They include Saturday at Scottie's Grill, Aug. 22 at Fat Jack's Oyster and Sports Bar and Sept. 26 at Auntie Skinner's Riverboat Club down in Jefferson, Texas.
