Remember the 70s? | Museums System hosts Pop to the Culture trivia competition

TEXARKANA, Texas - The Texarkana Museums System invites you to test your 1971 smarts at the upcoming Pop to the Culture trivia competition at the Ace of Clubs House.

Trivia fans can create a team of four or join one from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 19, for this event held on the Ace of Clubs lawn. If you know a random array of facts about the 1970s, this is a great chance to test the depth of your knowledge.

TMS Docent Kristina Ellis has cooked up six categories of questions for trivia time. She found enough trivia to focus on 1971, the year the TMS was founded.

"We're going to have six rounds. Each round is going to have three questions," Ellis said. Each round focuses on a category like sports. They'll have a halftime with bonus points available. Then the next set of three rounds goes.

"After that's done we're going to have a wager round where it's going to be kind of a difficult question, so they're going to have to put something in order. They can wager from zero to 20 points," Ellis said.

When trivia-goers arrive, they will see a coffee bar with donated Starbucks coffee to enjoy. "It's also their 50th (anniversary) this year," Ellis said. And then there are the spoils of trivia victory to be won. "We're going to have a first place, a second place and third place prize," said Ellis.

People can group their own team of four players in advance, or attendees can come by themselves and join a team when they get there.

As to the 1971 trivia categories, they are: sports, pop culture, random, science and technology, music, politics and government. Whether it's musical styles, fashion trends or political upheaval, the 1970s were a busy time.

"I would love people to come and know that there's a lot of places in town that do trivia and I know a lot of it's free, but this is an opportunity for them to gather with maybe people they don't know or have friends that just have somewhere to hang out," Ellis said, suggesting it can be a family event, too.

People can sign up online by the day before the event or call in to register by noon on the day of the event.

(Admission: $5 per individual or $15 for a team of four. The Ace of Clubs House is located at 420 Pine St. in Texarkana, Texas. Register at TexarkanaMuseums.org/Events or call 903-793-4831. Trivia fans can also register via the Facebook event page.)
