Cars began lining up around 10 am Saturday at Liberty Eylau High School to take advantage of an early Thanksgiving and were still coming by the dozen around noon. It seems area citizens are in the Thanksgiving spirit and despite the crazy year it has been, they were determined to come have a taste. The feasters-to-be drove up in their cars, while students and volunteers brought them their orders.

Trevelyan Hodge, president of the school board, pointed out that this was an effort by the school's culinary arts students to give back to the community.

"Good experience for our kids, school and and community," he said. "$5 a plate, affiliated with The Brighter Tomorrow Foundation, they put this together. This was one way to get something to members of the community who may not get something for Thanksgiving. Very good price, very good food. Our culinary students are doing the actual cooking. Pork spare ribs, chicken and spaghetti, green beans, corn, garlic mashed potatoes and more."

The students' efforts were coordinated by Johnathan Boyce of The Brighter Tomorrow Foundation and Alicia Prater of L-E's culinary arts program.

Donna Bernier of Liberty Eylau was there to support the local community. She has won a free plate, but went ahead and paid for more. She and her daughter, Ginger Lopez, were ready to feast.

"We will be celebrating Thanksgiving at home, my other daughter will be there as well," she said. "But this is a blessing for a good cause."

Sean Golden of Texarkana, Texas, responded to one of the advertising leaflets. This was not going to be his only feast.

"This is one of several," he said. "We will be having barbecue on Thanksgiving day. Despite the huge line here, we think this is going to be worth it. We are glad to help out and support the school."
