Sheriff says man attacked relative to kill a 'demon'

LAKE CHARLES, La. - A Louisiana man charged with attempted murder told investigators he was trying to kill "a demon" when he used a knife to repeatedly slash a relative, authorities said.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office said deputies responding to a call Wednesday found 19-year-old Patrick T. Amos covered in blood and he told them he had just killed a family member.

Deputies found the victim suffering from multiple lacerations made by a knife, but still alive. The relative was taken to a hospital and in stable condition Friday, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

Amos later told detectives he and been using methamphetamine and "was being tormented by a demon that was inside the family member and he attempted to kill it with a large knife." He was charged with second-degree attempted murder.

It was not immediately known if Amos had an attorney.
