The Other Shoe | Petitions are circulating for recreational marijuana in Arkansas

Two years ago Arkansas voters legalized medical marijuana.

At the time, we wondered how long it would be before there was a push to make the stuff legal for recreational purposes.

As it turns out, about the same amount of time it took to get the medical pot shops up and running.

Yes, we have two brand-new medical marijuana dispensaries in Texarkana, and come November, voters may get to decide whether to allow recreational use.

Several groups in Arkansas are circulating petitions for ballot initiatives allowing such use. It will take 90,000 signatures from registered Arkansas voters by July 3 to get any of the proposals on the ballot. That means the push is on and there's a chance some readers will be approached to put their John Hancocks on a petition.

Whether or not to do so is a personal choice. Just be sure you get the facts first.

For example, one group - Arkansas True Grass - has a proposed amendment that would not only allow recreational use and regulate growth and sales of the marijuana plant but would also free those convicted of marijuana offenses from prison and expunge their records.

Maybe that's something you support. Maybe not. But it pays to know just what you are supporting before signing the line.
