Second Stimulus? President seems to confirm another round of payments will soon be announced

The first COVID-19 economic stimulus package sent payments of $1,200 to most Americans along with additional $500 for each dependent child.

The $2 trillion package also temporarily boosted unemployment benefits by $600 weekly and provided loans for businesses and direct payments to state and local governments to help with COVID-19 costs.

The big question since has been whether or not there will be a second stimulus package and what it would contain. There have been proposals, but nothing has been approved

Now, President Donald Trump seems to have confirmed another stimulus - and soon.

Speaking Monday with Scripps Washington Correspondent Joe St. George, the president said, "We will be doing another stimulus package. It'll be very good, it'll be very generous."

Pressed for details President Trump wouldn't give had numbers, but said details would be forthcoming, probably in the next "couple of weeks." When asked if the federal government would be sending Americans another round of checks, the president answered, "Yeah, we are. We are."

What this means no one can say. The president is known of speaking off the cuff and sometimes the end results don't match the words of the moment. And Senate Republicans have been lukewarm to the idea of direct payments, signaling a preference for things like a payroll tax cut or a "back to work bonus."

Still, this might put pressure on Congress to send the president a stimulus bill that does include a second check for Americans.

Whether that will happen in the next couple of weeks is doubtful at best. Still, we'll just have to wait and see.
