Be Strong | 2020 grads face difficult road ahead

S

o, Class of 2020, what's next?

For some it's grad school. But for most the next stage in life means finding a job-hopefully one where the pay is enough to cover food, rent and a little fun. Maybe even make a dent in the student loans.

A year ago, the job market was pretty hot, according to Glassdoor Economic Research, which collects data on the labor market.

This year? Not so much. Thanks to the global COVID-19 pandemic, there's not a lot of hiring. Some industries - such as travel and tourism - have virtually disappeared for now.

New grads will be competing for jobs with millions currently unemployed. Competing for fewer jobs, we should add, as positions are eliminated and entire businesses closing their doors.

Even summer internships are scarce. Glassdoor reported this month that about half of all internships available last year won't be happening this time around.

That's bad news for the nearly million expected to graduate college this year. Things will eventually get back to some semblance of normal. Companies will start hiring, adding more and more jobs. There will be opportunities come from this crisis.

Stop us if you've head that before.

Nice words, sure, but we know they are little comfort for those facing the current situation.

We wish we could offer more immediate positive news. We believe in the American Dream and the promise of better days ahead. But the fact is we are living now, not in the future. It's going to be tough, but keep going, doing your best and don't give up. Things will get better.

We wish you the best.
